BOONVILLE — Starmount High is getting its varsity girls basketball coach back.
The Rams have rehired teacher/coach Kyle Hutchens for the 2009-10 school year. Hutchens coached the Lady Rams the past two winter, as well as the girls tennis team in 2008.
Hutchens was among a group of first- and second-year teachers whose contracts weren’t renewed back in June due to budget concerns across the Yadkin school system.
Superintendent Dr. James Benfield said at the time that he hoped some of those teachers would be rehired later in the summer after the county system had a better idea of its budget for the upcoming school year.
Hutchens said he found out late last week that he would be back at Starmount. Despite the uncertainty in his job status, Hutchens took the Rams to a team camp in Mount Airy in July as well as other off-season activities.
Hutchens’ 2008-09 varsity girls basketball team posted a 19-8 overall record, 9-3 in the Mountain Valley 2A Conference — the best record for the program in several years.
Starmount was the only team to beat MVAC champion Ashe County in the regular season. West Stanly knocked the Rams out of the playoffs in the first round by two points.
